چکیده

The unsaturated soil hydraulic properties (the soil water characteristic and relative permeability curves) are key hydrodynamic parameters in the fields of soil science and civil engineering. Because of the strong dependency of these properties on water content, their determination is subject to considerable experimental and numerical problems. Difficulties increase when the soil approaches oven-dry conditions, a situation often encountered in arid and semi-arid areas. Moreover, computational costs of estimating the hydrodynamic properties can be relatively high also. After a short review of alternative modeling approaches for the hydraulic functions from saturation to oven-dryness, we present a theoreticalnumerical approach, along with a relatively simple, robust and inexpensive experimental method for inverse determination of van Genuchten/Mualem soil hydraulic parameters. For gravimetric water contents greater than 0.04, numeral results agreed well with experimental data, while some discrepancies were observed at very low water contents.

ارزیابی هدایت هیدرولیکی نقطه عطف منحنی مشخصه رطوبتی به عنوان مرجع در برخی مدل‌های هدایت هیدرولیکی غیراشباع خاک

Direct measurement of soil unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (K(h) or K(θ)) is difficult and time-consuming, and often in many applied models, predicting hydraulic conductivity is carried out according to measurements of soil retention curve and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). However, using KS as a matching point in many procedures may result in over-estimation of unsaturated hydraulic...

In order to assess hydraulics of LNAPLs in soil, the soil retention curves of petroleum and water were both determined through hanging column method. And, the hydraulic conductivity of petroleum and water were determined by steady head method. The water and petroleum hydraulic conductivities were 7.27 and 57.84 cm.day-1, respectively. The soil retention parameters were obtained based on van Gen...

A Modified Mualem–van Genuchten Formulation for Improved Description of the Hydraulic Conductivity Near Saturation

The unsaturated soil hydraulic properties are often described using Mualem–van Genuchten (MVG) type analytical functions. Recent studies suggest several shortcomings of these functions near saturation, notably the lack of second-order continuity of the soil water retention function at saturation and the inability of the hydraulic conductivity function to account for macroporosity. We present a ...

Evaluation of Hydraulic Parameters Obtained by Different Measurement Methods for Heterogeneous Gravel Soil

Knowledge of soil hydraulic parameters for the van Genuchten function is important to characterize soil water movement for watershed management. Accurate and rapid prediction of soil water flow in heterogeneous gravel soil has become a hot topic in recent years. However, it is difficult to precisely estimate hydraulic parameters in a heterogeneous soil with rock fragments. In this study, the HY...

Accurate characterization and modeling of subsurface flow in multi-fluid soil systems require development of a rapid, reproducible experimental method that yields the information necessary to determine the parameters of the capillary pressure–saturation and permeability functions. Previous work has demonstrated that parameter optimization using inverse modeling is a powerful approach to indirec...
